All of Us Strangers - I suppose we don't get to decide when it ends
Adam lives alone in an apartment building in London. One day, his neighbor, Harry, shows up and introduces himself. It is their first encounter, but Adam declines Harry’s invitation to hang out together. Adam runs into Harry again when he returns home, and Adam is now interested in Harry. Adam is now interested in Harry and wants to get to know him better. They begin dating and eventually move in together.
Adam tells Harry that his parents died when he was young. But he still sees his parents from time to time in his visions. In his visions, he shares his day-to-day life with his parents as if they had never left him. In his vision, Adam comes out to his parents, and they accept who he is. His father feels sorry for not standing up to him when he needs help. Adam later forgives his father and they reconcile. As Adam and Harry get closer, they start partying a lot and doing drugs together. Adam becomes more emotional and starts seeing his parents more often in his visions.
Adam wants to take Harry to meet his parents, but Harry is skeptical of Adam's behavior. Adam takes Harry to his old house, but it is already occupied by someone. Adam starts seeing his parents in his vision and has a mental breakdown in front of the gate. The next morning, Adam is with his parents again in his vision. His parents want him to move on, because they know it is unhealthy for him to linger on the past. Adam agrees and bids his farewell to them before they disappear.
Adam knows he is ready to return to his normal life with Harry, so he goes back home. What he finds in the house is Harry lying dead in the room. Adam’s interaction with Harry also lives in his vision only. In his vision, Harry is back and Adam assures him it is alright. They hug and fade out.
Things happen in life, and not all of them always go the way we desire. Sometimes we experience loss, which is definitely not something we want. When that happens, we might get trapped in the loss, wondering what could have happened. What if they were still here, would things change? Definitely, but the thing is it is not going to happen. The what ifs can only live in our imagination. If we are obsessed with the imagined future, we will distance ourselves from reality. The truth is reality can never be as good as our fantasy, because we cannot control everything in our own life.
We have to accept our losses and move on with our lives. If we dwell on the past, we can never grow up. Acknowledging reality doesn't mean forgetting the past. It means living with it. When we accept what has happened, we allow ourselves to grow and open ourselves up to new experiences and adventures. We may not be able to change the past, but we can choose how to respond.
