Babylon - It's written in the stars. I am a star
This is a story about a young actress named Nellie LaRoy who comes to Hollywood with big dreams. She meets Manny, who helps her crash a party. Though they've never met before, Manny is interested in her from the moment he sees her. They both share the American dream of making it big in Hollywood. Nellie believes that someone is either a star or not, and she knows that she is one. She just needs a chance to prove herself to the world. At the party, she has fun and dances like she belongs there. When an actress overdoses and can't film the next day, Nellie is asked to replace her. In the studio, she showcases her acting talent and soon becomes one of the hottest stars in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Manny works as an assistant to Jack Conrad, a renowned star in Hollywood. He works hard and smart, and soon climbs up to the executive level of the studio. Nellie's life is not entirely perfect; her mom is in a sanatorium while her father is her manager, but he's not very good at it. At another party, Nellie wants to embarrass her father by asking him to play with a snake, but he passes out. Nellie decides to play with the snake herself, but she gets bitten by it. Lady Fay Zhu kills the snake and sucks the poisonous blood out of Nellie. Nellie kisses her afterwards.
Manny is offered an executive position in a studio to work alongside Nellie, and he accepts. It's been reported that Nellie has a close relationship with Lady Fay Zhu, and the studio feels that their relationship has impacted Nellie's career. Manny convinces Lady to end the affair, which upsets Nellie. She turns to gambling and loses a lot of money to James McKay. She then turns to Manny for help, and with the aid of "Count," they pay James with counterfeit notes. James doesn't discover the fake notes until they become blurry with a drop of water. They manage to escape, but they know they can't stay there for long.
Manny decides to flee with Nellie and proposes to her at the same time. James's gang tracks them down and shoots "Count." Manny begs for mercy, and they leave immediately, but he loses track of Nellie. It is later revealed that Nellie was found dead, and Jack killed himself due to his decline in fame.
This is an epic drama about the golden age of Hollywood, a time when the movie industry experienced a boom. These people shaped what modern movies look like today. With advancements in technology, the cinematic experience has vastly improved. Movies have gone from square, black-and-white silent films to the color, wide-screen, sound-filled films we see today. The stars of that era were good-looking, but they had their own problems too. Fame in Hollywood is short-lived; if you can't stand out from others, you will be phased out and forgotten by the audience. Jack was once a famous star, but he didn't excel in sound films anymore. Unable to accept failure, he shot himself. Nellie gained fame quickly, but she was unable to find a way to sustain it.
Life is full of ups and downs. Welcome to the club. That's life.
