Before Sunset - It's about that moment in time that's forever gone
Jesse and Celine promised to meet 6 months again in Vienna, the place they travelled together for just a night. After 9 years, Celine runs into Jesse in a Paris bookstore, where he is promoting his new book. Ironically, the new book is about a fictional love story that is loosely based on that one night he spent with Celine. Jesse didn't expect to see Celine, so he is kinda overwhelmed when he sees her the first time in 9 years. Celine apologizes for not honoring the promise of meeting in the same place after 6 months, because that day was her grandmother's funeral. On the other hand, Jesse reveals that he did visit the same place and wait for her for a whole day. They didn't exchange any contacts the day they parted, so Jesse didn't know why Celine didn't show up that day. Learning the reason why Celine was absent that day does make Jesse feel better as he originally thought their connection wasn't real at all. Jesse has to catch flight later that day, but he still has some time left after the book sharing session, so Celine decides to show him around Paris.
Jesse is now an author who writes book. He is married with a kid. It seems he has a good career with nice family, but it not true at all. He doesn't love his wife the way he felt before. Celine has dated a couple of guys on and off, but she still can't find her Mr. right. She complains that all the guys she dated before are better off after the breakup. She has been searching love for so long that she is a bit tired of it. She always thinks that the night she spent is the most romantic one, and nothing else can measure up. Having this kind of thought, it is hard for her to move on in a relationship. Even Jesse has moved on, he still can't forget Celine. Writing a book about Celine is not only to capture everything he's done with her, but also to find her and meet her once again.
What would happen if Celine and Jesse meets up honoring the promises they had 6 months ago? Their life would probably never be the same. They love at the first sight and share the most romantic night ever in their life. Are they going to be a good couple? No one can tell. They may have lots of things in common and endless topics to talk about, but a relationship is more than that. Perhaps having a memorable once-in-a-lifetime romance is better than a marriage that would fail eventually. 9 years ago, they were just innocent young adults fooling around a foreign country, hoping to spend the most romantic night with someone they just met. They didn't exchange contacts, so they move on with their own lives. 9 years later, they still reminisce about that night. However, they just don't have high hopes on having another relationship that's more romantic than the one they had 9 years ago.
