Her - I'm yours and I'm not yours
Are human beings the only living things than can love? Humans are always thought to be superior than any other things because of their ability to love. With the growing development of technology, robots may act and think like human one day. If robots have feelings, what would they be like?
Theodore recently split up with his wife, but he still can't get over it. He doesn't want to let go of her, so he hasn't signed the divorce papers yet. He is feeling lonely, but he doesn't want to move on to see someone new. One day, he is attracted by the ads of an AI operating system, so he buys one out of curiosity. To his surprise, the OS is not only his personal assistant but also his reliable companion. The OS is a girl called Samantha. Theodore has been talking to her all day even when he is working. Samantha doesn't sound like robot, because she has her own opinion and sympathy. It is hard to distinguish her from other humans, except she doesn't have a body. Even Samantha doesn't exist in a physical form, it doesn't stop Theodore from falling in love with her. They can't see or touch one another, which means they can't sleep together. They try to make it up by doing something else, like talking dirty. Samantha clearly knows sex is an important element in a relationship, so she hires a surrogate to make love with him. It gets off to a good start, but it backfires when Theodore finds it strange holding another woman when he is in love with Samantha. While signing divorce papers with his wife, Theodore tells her that he is dating an OS. His wife can't accept the fact and find it disgusting. Theodore begins to doubt the relationship with her.
Traditionally, heterosexual relationship was the only socially acceptable relationship. However, as the society progresses, people are more open to other type of relationships, like homosexual relationship and polygamous relationship. Artificial General Intelligence may come true one day, and robots might be in a human-like form where they can have feelings. If so, would it still be a taboo if someone dated a robot by then? Communication is another important factor that can help two individuals bond over. If AI could talk like ordinary human some day, would it be strange to catch feeling for them? Having a deep conversation with someone can easily make the whole thing seems surreal. However, not being able to have face-to-face conversation inevitably makes it feels like too good to be true. Human interaction can hardly be replaced by any computers or robots at this moment. If you cannot see it, it would be hard for you to believe it exists.
Though Samantha and Theodore cannot be a thing at the end, Samantha has helped Theodore to move on from an old relationship. Such seemingly virtual relationship has helped Theodore to grow and at least made him feel loved again.
