King Richard - If you fail to plan, you plan to fail

The movie is based on Richard Williams' true story. He is a black man living with his family in Compton. They live together in a poor neighborhood, where his daughters sometimes get harassed by the hicks. Richard always wants to move up the social ladder, and he has got a plan. He has planned out the future of his daughters, Venus and Serena, even before they were born, which is to make them the professional tennis players. Richard and his wife Brandy were athletes, so they are responsible for coaching the girls when they were young. Richard knows that the girls won't be pros if they aren't coached by top players. Hence, he keeps reaching out other coaches showing them how talented the girls are. Paul Cohen is impressed with Venus's performance, so he is willing to coach her for free on second thought. To gain more experience, Paul encourage Richard to take Venus to join the juniors tournament. Venus is already an exceptional player at her age, so she has winning streaks in all competitions. After winning consecutively, Venus and her sisters start bragging about how outstanding she is. However, Richard wants them to stay humble rather than boasting themselves. As Venus is on fire, winning almost every competition, some agents come to Richard. Richard feels like the agents are despising his family for being black, so he turns them down and pulls Venus out of the tournament. Richard fires Paul and finds Rick Macci to be their new coach. Richard still wants their girls to focus on their schoolworks rather rather than playing in juniors again, so Venus has not played any matches in 3 years. 3 years later, Venus wants to compete again, so she stands up for herself and convinces her father to let her join. Richard agrees, so they are going to Oakland for the tournament. Venus didn't win the championship, but she did perform well and caught the attention of some big brands. The rest is history.  

Richard is definitely not the most likable person, because sometimes he is just so stubborn. He has got a plan, so he wants everything to stick with his plan. He knows how talented his girls are, so he has trained them very hard and make them practice all day. He has high expectation on them, because he knows they will be the best players and eventually make the whole family better off. Having such plan in him, he doesn't always listen to others, because he feels like he is always right. He did make controversial decisions, like pulling Venus out of the tournament was quite a shock as no one used to do that before. The rationale behind such decision is to keep his daughter from being exploited. There is no doubts that he loves his daughters, but sometimes he is just being overprotective. He has been controlling Venus' life in her journey to becoming a pro tennis player, because he thinks he knows what's good for her.

Richard is probably a self-righteous person, but having said that, his plan did work, and he managed to makes his daughters become the world-renowned pro tennis players.
