Poor Things - I have adventured it and found nothing but sugar and violence
Godwin Baxter is a surgeon and a professor in London. Max McCandles becomes his assistant helping him to monitor Bella’s activity and progress every day. Bella behaves weirdly and sometimes acts like a baby. Bella has never stepped outside the door until she beg Godwin to bring her out one day. Max knows there’s something about her, but he just can’t point his finger at until he discovers that she is an experiment. Godwin found a corpse under the bridge, so he implanted a fetus’s brain to revive the woman and name her as Bella. Max finds it unacceptable, but he is silenced by Godwin when Godwin suggests him to marry Bella. Max agrees and Godwin finds a lawyer named Duncan to draft a contract to make sure Max and Bella stay in his house throughout her life. Bella begins to explore her body and gets amused from playing with herself. The lawyer is interested in knowing who the girl is, so he sneaks up his room and asks her to travel abroad with him. Though Max is unwilling to let her travel with a stranger, she elopes with Duncan, yearning for more freedom. Duncan enjoys her company because they have passionate encounters all the time. Bella is still acting weird and causes trouble. Bella once embarrasses Duncan in front of his friends. Annoyed by Bella’s absurd behavior, Duncan smuggles her into a cruise ship. On the ship, Bella makes friends with Martha and Harry, who encourage her intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge. On the other hand, Duncan becomes obsessed with drinking and gambling. Bella witnesses how the poor people in Alexandria are suffering, so she decides to donate the money that Duncan won in the gambling to the poor people. Duncan goes banana when he knows all his winnings are in the hand of some strangers. Unable to pay the cruise fee, they are forced to stop at France. To make a living, Bella works in a brothel. Duncan is mad at Bella for working as a prostitute. She eventually leaves Duncan, finding support among her fellow workers and pursuing an education.
Soon after Bella leaves, Godwin conduct a similar experiment with another girl named Felicity. Felicity is not as good as Bella. It takes so much time for her to learn something simple. Godwin is upset that Bella is gone as she would be a successful product of his experiment. Godwin gets sick and his days are numbered, so Max sets out to find Bella. Bella returns home and reconciles with Godwin. She knows what Godwin has done to her, but she forgives him. Max is still interested in Bella, so they are going to get married. In the wedding, Alfie interrupts and claims she is indeed Victoria, who has been married to him for some years. Bella agrees to go with him. She is brought to his house and locked inside. Alfie doesn’t want to lose her again, so he’s planning to mutilate her. Bella manages to escape from his house by shooting him. To get back at him for what he did to Victoria, Bella implants his brain into a goat. Godwin dies peacefully with Bella and Max on his side.
The movie follows Bella’s journey as she navigates in the adult world with a childlike curiosity. She has grown a sense of self-awareness and been exposed to the real world. Bella demonstrates a strong desire to control over her life. She challenges authority and defies the societal expectations.
