Suncoast - I know... he's in a better place now
Doris is a young girl who lives in Suncoast with her mother, Kristine, and her brother, Max. Doris attends a Christian school but doesn't consider herself an ordinary girl. Her life is very different from her classmates, because her brother has been suffering from brain cancer for years. Her mother has to work, so Doris has had to take on the responsibility of caring for her brother. Doris feels like she has sacrificed most of her youth to care for her dying brother. She doesn’t have any friends in school, so she has been feeling lonely most of the time.
Max's days are numbered, so his mother sends him to hospice care. Doris is bored staying home alone, so she asks her classmates to throw a party at her house. At the party, she meets some new friends who like to party and smoke. To fit in, Doris starts drinking and smoking with them. She enjoys it because she thinks this is what teenage life should be. She has been missing out the fun part when taking care of her dying brother. Kristine didn’t know her daughter had been inviting friends to have parties at home until she returns home early one day and spots her daughter kissing with another guy.
Doris, burdened by caring for her brother, hopes for his demise. She encounters Paul, an old man around the hospice who lost his wife years ago. Paul's longing to speak with his wife again reminds Doris of the significance of family. Doris wants to learn to drive, but her mom never allows her to drive the car. Paul offers Doris driving lessons.
While Doris is enjoying a night out with friends, she receives a call from her mother informing her that Max's life is in danger. Fearful, she rushes back to the hospice, only to find out her mother has lied. Doris cannot understand why her mother seems to prioritize Max over her, despite them both being her children. During her prom, another call from her mother goes unanswered. When she finally realizes this time it is real and her brother has passed away, Doris is devastated.
Life is fragile, and losing a loved one is a wound that takes time to heal. We never know when our time with someone will end, so it's important to cherish every moment we have together. When someone is gone, we miss everything about them, both good and bad. Don't wait until it's too late to tell someone how much you care. Make the most of every moment while they're still here. Embrace your loved ones while you have the chance, because the future is uncertain and tomorrow is never promised.
Well, okay, I got news for you. You're not normal, Doris. You're different. And you are going through something real here. This whole thing is a gift. It may not seem like it, but it is.
You know, Doris... When you have your own kids, you'll understand.I just can't stand the idea of him in that place by himself. He's my child. When he's in pain, I'm in pain.
You'll miss everything. All the good, all the bad… Hell, especially the bad. I'd give anything to hear my wife yell at me for letting the mosquitoes inside.
