Tár is a biographical film about a fictional character named Lydia Tár. Lydia is a renowned female conductor who leads the Berlin Philharmonic. To support other female conductors, she has founded the Accordion. Lydia was invited to speak about her new book and promote her upcoming live recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. She has also taught at a college, where she once dismissed a student who expressed hatred towards some famous musicians and criticized their past behavior. Lydia believes that music has nothing to do with one's behavior.Lydia is married to Sharon, who also works as a concertmaster along with her. They have a girl, but Lydia doesn't spend as much time taking care of their child as Sharon does. Francesca was the personal assistant to Lydia, who helps her take care of most of the stuff.Lydia holds an audition for a position in the orchestra, and Olga, one of the candidates, catches her eye. Lydia goes to great lengths to ensure that Olga gets the position. However, if she didn't like someone, she would dismiss them at all costs. Lydia has mentored Krista, a former fellow from the Accordion, but she became tired of Krista and wanted to end the affair, so she started ghosting Krista. Krista didn't want the relationship to end, so she kept sending emails to Lydia's assistant, Francesca. Francesca was expecting to take up the position of assistant conductor when Lydia dismissed Sebastian, but Lydia found another candidate, causing Francesca to leave. After Krista committed suicide, Lydia started to be haunted by the delusion of Krista. Krista's family planned to sue Lydia, and rumors about Lydia spread. A group of people even went on a demonstration fighting justice for Krista. An edited video of Lydia lecturing her students went viral on the internet. Lydia was removed from her position as conductor after a series of controversies. Sharon was angry at what Lydia had done and barred her from seeing their kid. Lydia was infuriated by how she was treated, so she broke into their live recording session and trashed the place. She also attacked the person who had replaced her as the new conductor and was escorted out. Lydia returned to her childhood home and revisited her collections, which reminded her of what music meant to her.
