The Banshees of Inisherin - Some things there's no moving on from
The story is about Colm who doesn't want to be friends with his old friend, Pádraic. Colm has found Pádraic dull and spending time with him was a waste of his time. Colm would rather spend more time composing his songs than hanging out with Pádraic. Pádraic initially thought it was just an April Fools' joke, so he keeps bothering Colm, asking him why he doesn't want to be friends anymore. Colm finds Pádraic annoying and threatens that he will cut his finger one by one if Pádraic speaks to him again. This doesn't stop Pádraic from confronting Colm. Pádraic has been a nice guy, and he thinks Colm mistook his niceness as dullness. Colm really means what he said and throws his finger at Pádraic's door. Pádraic's sister is fed up with the madness and wants a new life outside Inisherin, so she leaves Pádraic alone. Pádraic returns home and finds out his beloved donkey has been killed by Colm's finger. Pádraic is so mad that he has to take revenge at Colm. He sets a fire at Colm's house after warning Colm. Colm survives from the fire. Colm apologizes for killing Pádraic's donkey and thanks Pádraic for taking care of his dog. Colm suggests that they should put an end to this whole thing, but Pádraic says it will end only if Colm dies.
Dominic is another tragic character in the story. He has an abusive father, so he has been living miserably. He is a friend of Pádraic's and have been trying to defuse the conflicts between Pádraic and Colm with Pádraic's sister. He grows fond of Pádraic's sister over time and turn to her to confess his love. After being rejected by Pádraic's sister, he feels dejected and commits suicide. His death and the death of the donkey have been predicted by the banshee, a mysterious old woman who has told Pádraic her prediction before everything happened.
Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and some of them will just fall apart eventually. As you get older, you may find your old friends are not in sync with you, and you just want new friends. In other words, you've overgrown your friendships. At the same time, it's also true that making new friends is harder when you are getting older. You may want to hold on to every friendship you have, but if you linger, you are actually overstretching it. It's just like a one-sided friendship, where it is hard to make your friend like you again. There is really no use in bothering your friends over and over again. Sometimes, you just have to let it go and understand that some differences are irreconcilable that you have to quit at some point. It is better to quit the friendship before it becomes a hostile feud. Learning how to let go can prevent all the tragedies. They would have become strangers rather than enemies if they had let the friendship go.
