The Graduate - Maybe we are, and maybe we're not
What are we supposed to do upon graduation if we don't know what we want? To follow what your parents say? To follow your heart?
Benjamin just graduated from the college, and it seems everyone around him has high expectation on him. On the other hand, he is lost because he just doesn't know what to do next with his life. He has got lots of options, but he is particularly into any one of them. In a party celebrating his graduation, he meets a friend of his parents, Mrs. Robinson. Attracted by Benjamin, Mrs. Robinson invites him to go home with her and attempts to seduce him. Though Benjamin is attracted to her as well, he manages to resist his temptation. Ever since the party is over, his parents has been coercing him into doing something he doesn't like, which makes him feel lonely over time. He wants to have fun, so he asks Mrs. Robinson to come over to spend a night at hotel together. It is his first time, so he acts weirdly the whole night. It was supposed to a one night stand, but they have turned the whole thing to a regular thing now. In other words, they are having a secret affair over the summer. Sex is the only thing that brings them together, but Benjamin wants something more than this in the relationship. He tries to make conversation with her, but she doesn't open up herself, except warning him not to date her daughter, Elaine. He didn't think he would fall for her, so he swears not to date her. However, Mr. Robinson and his parents want him to ask Elaine out as they think Benjamin and Elaine can be a good pair. As he has promised Mrs. Robinson not to develop relationship with her daughter, Benjamin tries to sabotage the date, but he hurts her feeling at the same time. Benjamin cannot stand her crying, so he comforts her and stops ruining the date. He eventually falls in love with her. Threatened by Mrs. Robinson, he tells Elaine what's going on between her mother and him.
That is the moment when Benjamin knows exactly what he wants in his life. He has been always told by others what he has to do in order to be successful, especially his parents. His parents have been forcing him to be a good boy when he was young. There were lots of things that Benjamin didn't want to do, but he didn't have the courage to go against them. Now, He has grown up from an innocent boy that could only follow what his parents said. He finally makes a decision for his life, which is to marry the girl he loves at first sight. Mr. Robinson might be a bad influence to him, but she did make Benjamin grow up as a man to fight for his love. He used to be a mama's boy, but now he has become a man who is not afraid to stand against his parents and others that get in the way of marrying Elaine.
