Upside-Down Magic - As long as we have faith in ourselves, and each other, there's no evil we can't conquer
Reina and Nory were born special, because they know some tricks that normal people can't do. Because of their magical ability, they were sent to Sage Academy, a prominent magical school. Reina is a talented girl who can control her magical power easily, but Nory is apparently less talented than Reina as her magic is a bit wonky sometimes. Reina is really a talented student but she is still not as good as the top performer in the class, so she is stressed all the time. On the other hand, Nory's magic is almost the worst, so she is classified as UDM. UDMs are often seen as a threat to the school, because they seem to be an easy target for shadow magic. Knowing they cannot learn magic really bum Nory out, because developing her magic has always been her dream. Though she clearly knows that she is not allowed to use magic, she still find time to practice her magic. She wants to prove to others that UDM is not unteachable, but her magic is not as good as others after days of practicing. The headmistress is mad at them for using magic secretly, so now all of them cannot attend the Founders' Day. What Nory did is not an absolute failure, because now Skriff believes that UDMs can be so much more than what Sage expects. With Skriff's teaching, Nory and other UDMs are able to embrace their shortcomings and make good use of them.
On the other hand, the teacher has been pressuring Reina, because she thinks that Reina can achieve more. Since then Reina is confused and stressed all the time. Unlike Nory, Reina does not get along well with other students, so she is overwhelmed by all the new things at school. Chandra offers her a book to improve her magical skills, but it turns out to be the Shadow Magic Book. Reina's power is much better than before, but she seems can't control herself well. Nory knows that Reina is up to something, so she is going to stop that with her friends.
UDMs are different, but that does not mean they are useless or dangerous. Their magic might not be the most perfect, but they can make good use of the wacky magic with guidance. They are born to be magical, so not allowing them to use magic is just like asking them to be someone else. Like other typical Disney movies, one of the messages delivered by this movie is to be true to yourself. You don't have to follow what others tell you to do and you don't have to do things to please others. If you think they are wrong, just prove it that you are as capable as others and show them your talents. Give yourself credit, because you are more than what others think you are. Believe in yourself and never give up even when someone tells you to. You are all special in your own way.
