Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist S02E09 - Hiding things doesn't really seem like a great way to start something new

Zoey finally hooked up with Simon, and she is feeling great about it. Mo has a friend that can connect with the spirits, so he invites Zoey over to give it a try. As a science person, Zoey doesn't find her convincing. Indeed, Zoey feels like the spiritualist is just a scam.

Though Max is no longer her boyfriend, but they still remain good friends like what they were before. Zoey and Max are in relationship now but separately with different partners, but they are happy for each other for finding the right one. All of a sudden, Max sings a very sad hearts songs to Zoey, but Zoey doesn't get it. She wonders if he is hiding something behind her, but it seems he's more than normal than Zoey. Zoey believes that her power is not functioning well, so she reaches out to Mo. While Mo is having a fight with his new hookup, he sings a song that he would never sing in real life. With all the evidences, it is clear that Zoey's superpower is unstable.

Zoey's employees are still arguing which idea is better for the new phone, but then they start to sing a sad song, which doesn't make sense at all. In the office, Simon also sings her a strange animal songs that almost creeps Zoey out. Back to home, Zoey wants to check on how her mum is doing after throwing a party for other couples. She obviously doesn't feel happy, but later she sings an upbeat song in front of Zoey. At that moment, she realizes the people around her are switching songs.

Zoey suspects Max's new girlfriend has something to do with Max's heart song, so she goes to her event with Max to find out what she has been doing. Zoey is right on that Rose and Max switched their songs. Rose reveals that she has been sober for a while now, but she didn't tell the whole truth to Max fearing that he might look at her differently. Zoey is facing the exact same situation with her, because she doesn't know whether she should be honest with Simon about her secret superpower. After a short chat, they both agree that it is better to be honest. Rose comes clean to Max, and Max is glad for what Zoey did to her. Zoey wants to do the same to Simon with what Rose did to Max, but she still hasn't had the courage to tell him the whole story. Having said that, Simon still loves Zoey. He even makes her a chair for her to stand on so that she can reach for the upper things.

With Mo's detective mind, he figures out that creepy animal songs belong to his new boyfriend Perry, because the stuffed animal is something that Perry's son needs in order to sleep. That means Simon and Perry switched the songs. Most mysteries are solved by now, except one really sad song that sung by Max. With all the clues given by the spiritualist, Zoey figures out what causes the glitch. It is not the spiritualist meddling with Zoey's power, but it is herself leaving out someone. Emily is going through something, and she has been trying to reach out to Zoey the whole week. However, Zoey didn't pay attention to her texts crying for help. Emily wanted to sing her a song, but Zoey didn't even give her a chance to sing out her feelings. At the end, Emily finally lets out her feelings, and things are getting back to normal.

Zoey has been relying her superpower too much that she used to wait for people to sing their heart songs in front of her. This is her way to get to know what others are feeling. This is the reason why she omitted Emily, because Zoey didn't recognize Emily is in need. Zoey's superpower did help herself spot some of the innermost feelings of others, but it is not omnipotent when people are not around her. On top of that, she is not completely honest with that superpower she has. A good relationship is built on trust. If Zoey doesn't let Simon know she has the power of hearing his feelings, she definitely gets the upper hand in the relationship, which makes the whole situation unfair.
